71st National Film Awards: Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukerji, Vikrant Massey Shine as Mohanlal Wins Dadasaheb Phalke Award
The 71st National Film Awards celebrated Indian cinema’s finest, with Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukerji, and Vikrant Massey winning their first National Awards, while Mohanlal was honoured with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award.

The 71st National Film Awards turned Vigyan Bhawan into a spectacular celebration of Indian cinema, with the country’s most celebrated stars coming together for a night of pride and recognition. This year’s ceremony carried a special charm as three of Bollywood’s most beloved names — Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukerji, and Vikrant Massey — took home their very first National Awards.
The energy in the hall was electric as President Droupadi Murmu presented the awards. The announcement of Shah Rukh Khan’s name for Best Actor for his powerful performance in Jawan brought thunderous applause, with fans, media, and industry insiders cheering for the man who has redefined superstardom for over three decades. The 59-year-old actor walked onto the stage, dignified in a black suit and crisp white shirt, a look that perfectly reflected the occasion’s prestige.
Equally heartwarming was Rani Mukerji’s victory as Best Actress for her stirring portrayal in Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway. The actress, who has been a consistent performer since the late 1990s, received a long overdue recognition that had her admirers celebrating. She was seated next to Shah Rukh during the ceremony, and the two were seen exchanging smiles and clicking pictures, a moment that fans of the iconic duo will cherish.
Vikrant Massey, one of the most talented actors of the current generation, shared the Best Actor award with Shah Rukh for his extraordinary performance in 12th Fail. The film, which traces the journey of a young man navigating life’s struggles to achieve his dreams, also bagged the Best Feature Film award, making it one of the night’s biggest winners.
The evening was made even more historic when Mohanlal, one of Indian cinema’s finest actors, was conferred with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. At 65, he became the youngest recipient of the country’s highest cinematic honour and only the second Malayali to receive it after Adoor Gopalakrishnan. The entire hall rose to its feet, giving Mohanlal a standing ovation that lasted several moments, a testament to his unparalleled contribution to Indian films.
Other major winners of the night included Sudipto Sen, who took home the Best Director award for The Kerala Story, Guneet Monga-backed Kathal: A Jackfruit Mystery which won Best Hindi Film, and Karan Johar’s Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahani which was awarded Best Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. Vaibhavi Merchant added to the glamour of the evening by winning Best Choreographer for the much-loved song ‘Dhindoora Baja Re’ from Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahani.
The 71st National Film Awards not only highlighted the creative brilliance of India’s filmmakers and performers but also reminded everyone why cinema continues to be the country’s most powerful cultural force. From celebrating superstars like Shah Rukh and Mohanlal to recognising new-age talents like Vikrant Massey, the evening was a perfect blend of nostalgia, inspiration, and celebration.
