Char Dham Yatra Turns Fatal as Kedarnath-Returning Helicopter Crashes; Safety Concerns Rise Over Heli Services

A routine heli service flight turned into a nightmare on Sunday morning when an Aryan Aviation helicopter, returning from Kedarnath Dham, crashed near Gaurikund at approximately 5:45 AM. Tragically, all seven people on board, including the pilot, were killed in the incident. Among the deceased were a couple and their 2-year-old child, along with two local residents, Vinod Negi and Vikram Singh Rawat, the latter being an employee of BKTC (Badri-Kedar Temple Committee).

According to preliminary reports, the crash was caused by adverse weather conditions. Eyewitnesses, primarily Nepali-origin women cutting grass in the nearby fields, reported hearing a loud noise and alerted the police. On arrival, authorities found the wreckage scattered across the forested slope, suggesting that the helicopter had fallen from a considerable height.

The helicopter had taken off from Kedarnath and was en route to Guptkashi when it lost control, likely due to poor visibility and unpredictable weather — a common but deadly hazard in this mountainous region.

CM Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed deep sorrow over the tragic incident and assured that an investigation would be conducted. "This is a heart-wrenching loss for the families and the state. Necessary steps will be taken to examine the safety protocols of heli operators in the Char Dham region," he stated.

This is not an isolated case. Just this pilgrimage season, multiple heli incidents have raised red flags over the operational safety of private helicopter services in Uttarakhand:

  • On June 7, a helicopter made an emergency landing on the Kedarnath highway.

  • On May 17, a heli ambulance crashed near Kedarnath, stirring fear among pilgrims.

With each passing accident, the trust in helicopter services is eroding, especially during the high-traffic Char Dham Yatra season, where thousands of devotees rely on aerial transportation due to the physically demanding terrain.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and Uttarakhand government are now expected to initiate a comprehensive safety audit of all heli services in the region. Many are demanding stricter regulations, better weather surveillance systems, and more stringent pilot training and route management protocols to prevent further tragedies.

As Uttarakhand reels from yet another aerial disaster, the families of the victims now face an irreparable loss — a grim reminder that even the skies above the holiest places are not immune to human failure and natural unpredictability.
